The Lagos State Government has announced plans to introduce an automated driver’s licence processing system in 2027, under which motorists will be able to obtain new licences within 30 minutes and complete renewals in just 10 minutes. The initiative is aimed at eliminating prolonged delays that have forced some applicants to wait months or even years after paying for their licences.
The Permanent Secretary of the Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), Rasheed Muri-Okunola, disclosed the development during the 2026 media parley organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation. He explained that the government was already testing the proposed system, which would enable applicants to complete preliminary procedures from their homes before visiting designated centres for biometric capture and other mandatory requirements. The government has also engaged consultants to automate the agency’s operations and improve service delivery.
Beyond driver’s licences, the planned digital system will cover vehicle documentation and number plate processing, reducing repeated visits to government offices. The government is also working to expand licence capture centres across the state, including proposed facilities in Badagry and Ojota. Although the new processing timelines are expected to take effect in 2027, the administration maintains that the reform will significantly improve accessibility, transparency and efficiency in motor vehicle administration.
