Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has criticised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for blaming opposition politicians for the hunger and poverty confronting Nigerians, describing the accusation as an attempt to evade responsibility for the economic hardship under his administration. Atiku, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, was reacting to Tinubu’s remarks at the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign flag-off in Kaduna on Saturday, October 24, 2026, where the President accused the opposition of creating hunger and poverty while insisting that his government was working to eradicate both.
In a statement issued through the Director of Strategic Communication of the ADC Presidential Campaign Council, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku described Tinubu’s remarks as “either delusion or a staggering case of political amnesia.” He argued that the APC had governed Nigeria for more than 11 years and could not reasonably shift responsibility for the country’s economic difficulties to opposition parties. The former Vice President challenged the administration to account for the consequences of fuel subsidy removal, the depreciation of the naira, rising poverty and persistent insecurity. He also questioned government expenditure, including reported spending on energy security and pipeline-related operations, demanding greater transparency over public funds.
Atiku further criticised Tinubu’s decision to commission a section of the Abuja–Kaduna Expressway from a stadium, alleging that the road remained unfinished. He maintained that Nigerians deserved explanations and measurable improvements in their living conditions rather than political accusations. According to him, the 2027 presidential election would provide an opportunity for Nigerians to assess the administration’s performance, insisting that voters would judge the President by their experiences of hardship, insecurity and the cost of living.
