As Nigeria draws closer to the next election season, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has issued a strict admonition to judges and heads of courts to guard against rulings and practices that compromise the integrity of the judiciary.
Speaking in Abuja at the opening session of the 2026 Roundtable for Heads of Courts organized by the National Judicial Institute (NJI), the CJN stressed that judicial officers must remain vigilant against forum shopping, the concealment of related proceedings, and attempts to extract conflicting orders from courts of coordinate jurisdiction.
Justice Kekere-Ekun noted that election-related disputes consistently attract immense public interest and intense political pressure. She cautioned that political sensitivity or public sentiment must never override strict fidelity to the Constitution, the Electoral Act, and established court rules.
Furthermore, she urged judicial heads to closely scrutinize urgent applications and ex parte orders, demand full and frank disclosures, and provide the leadership necessary to ensure that election matters are handled competently, expeditiously, and impartially.
