A Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has ordered the publication of a bench warrant in national newspapers against Walter Ubaka Okeke, a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial aspirant in Anambra State, after years of failing to appear for trial.
Justice Chinwendu Nwogu issued the order following an application by the prosecution, maintaining that the defendant has continuously evaded legal proceedings since the initial warrant was granted.
Key Highlights of the Ruling:
- The Allegations: Okeke is facing trial over an alleged ₦800 million theft involving oil materials, a case that has faced prolonged delays due to his absence from court.
- National Publication Order: The presiding judge upheld the prosecution’s oral application, directing that the bench warrant be published across major national dailies to ensure widespread public notice for his apprehension.
- Directives to Law Enforcement: Justice Nwogu authorized law enforcement agencies to apprehend Okeke anywhere in the world and ensure he is brought directly to the Port Harcourt Correctional Centre, with the trial formally adjourned to November 30, 2026.
