A coalition of legal practitioners in Sokoto State has formally invoked the Freedom of Information (FOI) Act to demand a comprehensive public disclosure regarding a controversial multi-billion-naira aircraft transaction and associated state expenditures.
The lawyers are pressing state authorities to provide a transparent financial breakdown of a reported ₦60 billion aircraft deal alongside separate expenditures totaling ₦15 billion, citing the fundamental right of citizens to transparency and accountability in governance.
Key Highlights of the Demand:
- Invocation of the FOI Act: Legal representatives served formal requests to relevant government offices, emphasizing that public institutions are legally mandated to account for how public funds are deployed under the law.
- The Core Inquiries: The lawyers’ petitions seek clear documentation, contract agreements, and utilization reports concerning the heavy outlays earmarked for the aircraft acquisition and the related financial allocations.
- Call for Accountability: Stressing that transparency remains crucial to good governance, the coalition warned that failure to honour the statutory timeline stipulated by the FOI Act would compel them to seek judicial intervention to compel disclosure.
