Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Amnesty International have called for a thorough investigation into the killing of popular Kano-based social media political commentator Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, who was found dead at his residence in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.
Dan Shagamu, known for his online commentary on political, religious and community issues, was found in a pool of blood at his home. Amnesty International said he had been overpowered and killed by his attackers, while the circumstances and motive behind the killing remain under investigation.
Reacting to the incident, Kwankwaso said he was deeply disturbed by the killing and urged the Kano State Government to immediately establish an investigative panel to uncover the circumstances surrounding the death and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The former governor also called on both the Kano State and Federal Governments to protect opposition voices against threats, attacks and intimidation, stressing that freedom of expression is constitutionally guaranteed.
Amnesty International similarly condemned the killing and demanded an effective investigation. The rights organisation expressed concern over reports of politically related threats and intimidation as Nigeria moves towards the 2027 elections, maintaining that critics and outspoken citizens should be able to express their views without being subjected to violence.
Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has also condemned the killing, describing it as shocking and unacceptable. He directed the police and Department of State Services in the state to intensify efforts to identify, arrest and prosecute those responsible.
Meanwhile, the Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the incident. Police spokesperson CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said investigations were ongoing.
