Chairman of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria, Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, has urged the National Assembly to accelerate the ongoing constitution review process to ensure its timely completion.

Ogundoyin made the call on Tuesday while speaking at the 2025 National Assembly Open Week held at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja.

He emphasised the need to strengthen Nigeria’s constitutional framework through inclusive and transparent legislative engagement.

“We respectfully urge the National Assembly to sustain the current momentum on the constitutional review process,” he said.

“Any loss of momentum, however unintended, risks undermining the impact and relevance of the proposed reforms. A timely conclusion is essential to allow for proper implementation ahead of the next general elections.”

He commended the leadership of the House of Representatives and the broader National Assembly for maintaining the tradition of the Open Week, which he described as a bold statement of commitment to transparency, openness, and participatory democracy.

Speaking on behalf of Speakers from all 36 State Houses of Assembly, Ogundoyin reaffirmed the commitment of state legislatures to work collaboratively with the National Assembly to advance constitutional reforms that reflect Nigeria’s evolving realities.

“We fully align with the vision of openness, accountability, and participatory governance. As a Conference, we stand ready to collaborate to ensure the constitution review process reflects the aspirations of the Nigerian people,” he said.

He also stressed the importance of inter-legislative cooperation between federal and state arms, noting that democratic stability depends on the independence and dynamism of legislative institutions.

“We must uphold the sanctity of legislative authority at all levels and promote constructive synergy in pursuit of national development,” he added.

Ogundoyin thanked the National Assembly for the opportunity to participate in the Open Week and expressed optimism that the engagement would yield meaningful outcomes to strengthen democratic governance and enrich the nation’s constitutional framework.
