Chris Brown Sentenced to Eight Months in Prison Over London Nightclub Assault, Avoids Jail

Chris Brown Sentencing News Graphic

American R&B singer Chris Brown has been handed an eight-month suspended prison sentence by a London court over a violent confrontation at a nightclub in 2023. The 37-year-old Grammy Award-winning musician was sentenced on Monday, October 26, 2026, at Southwark Crown Court after pleading guilty to affray. However, the sentence was suspended for 12 months, meaning Brown will not immediately serve a prison term unless he breaches the conditions of the suspension.

The case arose from an incident at Tape nightclub in Mayfair, London, on February 19, 2023, involving music producer Abraham Diaw. CCTV footage presented before the court showed Brown striking Diaw with a tequila bottle, including two blows to the head, during a confrontation that left the producer requiring hospital treatment. Delivering judgment, Judge Tony Baumgartner described the attack as serious and dangerous, noting that the repeated use of a glass bottle could have caused more severe injuries. The court nevertheless considered Brown’s guilty plea and other mitigating circumstances in deciding against immediate imprisonment.

Brown’s friend and vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, who also pleaded guilty to affray for his involvement in the incident, received a four-month prison sentence suspended for 12 months. More serious charges against the defendants were dropped following their guilty pleas. Brown’s sentencing brings the criminal proceedings arising from the nightclub incident to a close, although the ruling underscores the legal consequences of violent conduct regardless of an offender’s celebrity status.
