The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to upload and use the modified digital logo of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in place of the association logo with which the party was originally registered.
The decision was announced by NDC National Leader and former Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Seriake Dickson, who said the court, presided over by Justice J. O. Abdulmalik, granted the party’s request compelling INEC to recognise the logo contained in its constitution.
According to Dickson, the modified logo was approved at the party’s first National Executive Council meeting and subsequently forwarded to INEC. He said the electoral commission initially uploaded the new design but later removed it and reverted to the old association logo without communicating any reason to the party.
Dickson said the NDC gave INEC time to address the matter but eventually approached the court after the commission failed to make the requested change. He welcomed the judgment, describing the intervention of the judiciary as an affirmation of the party’s position and of due process.
Following the ruling, the NDC has directed its candidates and members to immediately begin using the modified logo on campaign posters, banners and other publicity materials ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Dickson acknowledged that some candidates may already have produced campaign materials bearing the previous logo but urged them to transition to the constitutionally approved design. He noted that both versions retain the party’s two-finger victory symbol.
The former governor also sought to reassure party members over the controversy, saying there was no reason for panic and that the leadership would continue to address challenges confronting the party through lawful and democratic means.
He added that the NDC would embark on a publicity and sensitisation campaign to familiarise party members, candidates and voters with the modified logo.
