The Abia State Police Command has announced plans to arraign three suspected armed robbers following investigations into their alleged involvement in criminal activities, including the theft of armoured cables belonging to a company in the state.

The suspects, identified as Chinweoke Friday, 23; Nmesoma Eze, 20; and Nnaemeka Nwaolisa, 19, were arrested on October 7 by operatives of the Osisioma Police Divisional Headquarters in collaboration with community security vigilantes.

According to the police, the arrests followed actionable intelligence about a suspected criminal group allegedly targeting tricycle operators and dispossessing residents of their belongings.

During the operation, the officers reportedly recovered a locally made pistol and a black bag containing chains, charms, a power bank, purses, an ATM card and spanners. The items were taken into police custody as investigations continued.

The police further disclosed that the suspects allegedly admitted during interrogation to involvement in the theft of armoured cables belonging to Planet Company, located along the Enugu-Aba Expressway in Osisioma. Video recordings of their statements were reportedly obtained by investigators.

The command said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend other suspected members of the group. The three arrested men are expected to be charged in court after the conclusion of investigations.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, disclosed the development in a statement issued on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi.

The commissioner reaffirmed the command’s commitment to tackling armed robbery and other criminal activities across Abia State. He also urged residents to provide timely and credible information that could assist security agencies in preventing crime and protecting lives and property.

The police said they would continue to strengthen intelligence-led operations and collaborate with community vigilantes and other stakeholders to improve security across the state.
