Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has explained that his recent meetings with British government officials and Nigerians living in the United Kingdom focused on addressing Nigeria’s leadership and development challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, disclosed this in a statement posted on his X account on Thursday, October 22, following a series of engagements in London.
He said he arrived in the British capital at about 7 a.m. on Wednesday from Basel, Switzerland, before proceeding with his scheduled meetings with various stakeholders.
According to him, his activities continued into the evening with a meeting organised by the Chief of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) and the NDC Director of Diaspora Affairs. The gathering brought together Nigerians and other stakeholders in London.
Obi explained that the discussions with British government officials and Nigerians in the diaspora centred on the collective responsibility of rebuilding Nigeria and addressing challenges associated with poor leadership, corruption and lack of accountability.
He maintained that these challenges had continued to undermine national development and deprive millions of Nigerians of access to essential services, including quality healthcare, education and decent employment opportunities.
The former Anambra governor said Nigerians deserved a country where every life mattered, hard work was rewarded and every citizen had a fair opportunity to succeed, regardless of background or personal connections.
He also called for a society where people could achieve their ambitions through merit rather than relying on privileged relationships.
Obi said Nigeria must become a country that provides opportunities for all citizens instead of serving the interests of a privileged few.
He concluded his message by reaffirming his vision for a better Nigeria, declaring that a new Nigeria was possible.
The London engagements come as political parties and their candidates intensify consultations and preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The NDC had earlier postponed the inauguration of its National Campaign Council from October 20 to October 26, citing Obi’s overseas engagements.
