The Ogun State Government has ordered a steel company in Sagamu to suspend operations following the death of one of its workers in an industrial accident.
The directive was announced on Tuesday by the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Environment, Dr Kafayat Lawal, following an on-site assessment and preliminary investigations conducted by officials of the ministry’s Safety Office.
The deceased worker was identified as Abdulfatai Nuru. He reportedly died in an operational accident at the company’s facility earlier in the day.
According to Lawal, preliminary findings indicated possible lapses in workplace safety at the facility, prompting the government to order an immediate suspension of operations pending the conclusion of a comprehensive investigation.
She explained that the decision was a precautionary measure to allow the authorities to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine the appropriate regulatory action.
“The Ogun State Government, through the Ministry of Environment, has therefore directed the facility to stop operation with immediate effect pending the conclusion of the ongoing investigation and further directives,” she stated.
Lawal expressed condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased worker, assuring them that the government would thoroughly investigate the incident.
She added that appropriate regulatory measures would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
The permanent secretary also reiterated the state government’s commitment to enforcing workplace safety standards across industries in Ogun State.
She reminded industrial operators of their responsibility to provide safe working environments, implement effective safety measures and comply strictly with relevant regulations to prevent avoidable workplace accidents.
The company is expected to remain shut pending the outcome of the investigation and further directives from the state government.
