A prison psychologist, Amber-Renee Gayle, has been sentenced to 28 months’ imprisonment at Birmingham Crown Court after being convicted of engaging in an illicit sexual relationship with a convicted murderer and smuggling contraband into a correctional facility.
Presiding over the case, Judge Sarah Buckingham condemned the actions as a “gross breach of trust,” warning that corruption within correctional institutions severely undermines safety for staff and the wider prison system.
Key Highlights of the Case:
- Contraband and Illicit Earnings: Investigators revealed that Gayle conspired with an inmate, Tyrese Williams, to smuggle 35 mobile phones, phone chargers, dongles, and SIM cards into HMP Swinfen Hall, generating an estimated £9,500 in illegal profits.
- The Relationship: The pair exchanged over 12,000 messages on secret phones, including intimate photographs, and engaged in a sexual relationship within the prison’s therapy rooms. Gayle also confessed to unlawfully accessing the prison’s National Offender Management Information System to look up confidential prisoner records.
- Sentencing Breakdown: Gayle received a 14-month sentence for conspiracy to convey prohibited items, an eight-month consecutive sentence for misconduct in public office, and an additional six months for unauthorized computer access, totaling 28 months behind bars.
- Impact on the Inmate: Williams, who is currently serving a life sentence with a minimum term of 25 years for murder, was handed an additional 14-month prison sentence, further delaying his future eligibility for parole.
