Court Orders Arrest and Committal of Lagos NURTW Chairman Sego and Secretary Over Contempt

rtdddf

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), Lagos Division, has ordered the arrest and committal to prison of the Lagos State Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Mustapha Adekunle (popularly known as Sego), and the union’s Secretary, Usman Teslim, for alleged disobedience of court orders.

Justice Isaac Essien issued the ruling after the two officials failed to appear before the court to show cause why they should not face imprisonment for contempt following ongoing disputes regarding the enforcement of lawful directives.

Key Highlights of the Ruling:

  • Contempt and Non-Compliance: The proceedings stem from allegations that union leadership continued to flout court rulings—specifically regarding the collection of daily, weekly, and security tickets from commercial tricycle operators in the state, in contravention of judicial rulings recognizing independent transport associations.
  • Order of Remand: Justice Essien ordered that the NURTW officials be arrested and detained at the Kirikiri Correctional Centre, directing law enforcement agencies, including the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), to execute the warrant.
  • Next Adjournment: The court adjourned the matter to November 16, 2026, to review whether the officials have purged themselves of the contempt.
