The Federal High Court in Abuja has scheduled January 27, 2027, to deliver its judgment in the high-profile terrorism financing trial of Tukur Mamu, the self-appointed negotiator for the victims of the March 2022 Abuja-Kaduna train attack.
Justice Mohammed Umar fixed the judgment date following the adoption of final written addresses by the prosecution counsel, David Kaswe, and the defence counsel, Johnson Usman, SAN.
Key Highlights of the Proceedings:
- Adoption of Final Arguments: During the court session, both legal teams presented their concluding arguments. While the Federal Government urged the court to convict the defendant based on the weight of evidence presented, the defence maintained its plea of not guilty, asserting that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case.
- Core Allegations: Mamu faces multi-count charges brought under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, which include acting as an intermediary for Boko Haram terrorists, collecting substantial ransom payments from families of abducted train passengers, concealing illicit funds, and communicating with insurgent commanders.
- Arrest and Prosecution History: The defendant was originally intercepted and arrested by security operatives at Cairo International Airport in September 2022 while en route to Saudi Arabia before being repatriated to face trial.
