A Season of Deaths In The Legal Community?

Exactly a week ago, I received with great shock and devastation the sad news of the death of my friend and University classmate, Olukayode Ajisafe. He was involved in a ghastly auto crash along Abuja – Lokoja road and died two days later in an hospital in Abuja as a result of the severe injuries sustained in the accident. Kayode was a member of NBA Ikeja Branch. Sadly, another friend and classmate in the University, Adebayo Buraimoh-Igbo, recently died after a brief illness and was buried last Friday, 8th of April, 2022. I was infact planning to send a condolence message to the NBA Kaduna Branch over the death of another colleague and member of NBA Kaduna Branch, Friday Ekpah Audu, Esq, when I heard of Bayo’s death. The late Friday Ekpah Audu, Esq reportedly slumped and died about three weeks ago. A few days after Audu’s death, I got the sad news of the death of another colleague and member of NBA Maiduguri Branch, M. S Umar Esq.

Unfortunately, another round of sad deaths hit the legal profession when news filtered that Amos Akaa Esq, a member of NBA Makurdi Branch and another young lawyer from Benue State, Benjamin Kpamor Iorhen Esq, who I understand was a Youth Corps member, serving in Plateau State had been involved in another ghastly motor accident and both colleagues died instantly.
Also, exactly two weeks ago, i.e. Monday, 28 March, 2022, the NBA lost three of it’s members in the horrific attack by bandits on the Abuja-Kaduna bound Train. The three members who died in the dastardly attack by terrorists tagged bandits by the Nigerian government and the media are Tibilere Mosugu Esq, Ozigi Lawal Esq, and Farida Sule Esq.

In another development, a leading oil and gas lawyer, Mr. Lucius Nwosu SAN passed away about a week ago. He was reported to have died in his sleep on Tuesday, 6th April, 2022. Until his death, Mr. Lucius Nwosu SAN was a member of NBA Portharcourt Branch.

Also, Okrika Branch of Rivers State lost one of her members, Alhaji Sani Sotonye Okiri who passed on in the early hours of Sunday, 10th April, 2022 and has been buried according to Muslim rites of passage in Rivers State. Though circumstances surrounding his sudden death is unknown.

This is certainly a period of mourning in the legal community and it’s a time that demands serious prayers and sobriety. I sympathize with the families of all the departed, their friends, the Nigerian Bar Association, particularly, the Ikeja Branch, Kaduna Branch, Maiduguri Branch, Makurdi Branch, Portharcourt Branch and other Branches of the Nigerian Bar Association that have lost a member or more in the last few weeks. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.
