A woman facing terrorism-related charges has admitted in court to assisting members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in keeping firearms and ammunition, during proceedings in Nigeria.
The admission was made as the prosecution presented its case against the defendant, who is accused of providing support to members of the proscribed terrorist group. The allegations centre on her alleged involvement in helping ISWAP members conceal or store weapons and ammunition.
The court proceedings form part of ongoing efforts by the authorities to prosecute individuals accused of providing logistical or other forms of support to terrorist organisations. Under Nigeria’s terrorism laws, material assistance to such groups can form the basis of criminal charges, depending on the circumstances of the alleged conduct.
The defendant’s admission is expected to form part of the evidence before the court as the case progresses. However, the allegations and evidence presented in court remain subject to judicial determination.
The case is continuing, with the court expected to consider further evidence before reaching a decision.
