The University of Lagos (UNILAG) will, on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, host its 461st inaugural lecture, with a focus on the legal realities surrounding matrimonial property rights in Nigeria.

The lecture, titled “Unequally Yoked: Matrimonial Property Rights Not a Promise of Law,” will be delivered by Professor Oluwakemi Mary Adekile of the Faculty of Law, a renowned scholar in Private and Property Law.

The event, which is the 15th inaugural lecture in the institution’s 2025/2026 academic session, will take place at the J.F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium by 4:00 p.m., with guests expected to be seated by 3:45 p.m.

The lecture is expected to interrogate the legal framework governing matrimonial property rights, a subject that has continued to generate debate within legal and policy circles, particularly in relation to equity, fairness and the protection of spouses upon dissolution of marriage.

UNILAG’s inaugural lecture series remains one of the institution’s foremost academic traditions, providing a platform for distinguished professors to present the outcome of years of research and contribute to national development discourse.
