Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have repelled a coordinated attack by Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters in Kukawa, Borno State, with the Nigerian Army reporting that more than 25 terrorists were neutralised and weapons recovered during the operation.

The attack targeted troops of the 101 Special Forces Battalion, with the terrorists advancing from four different directions in an apparent attempt to overwhelm the military position. The soldiers responded with ground operations supported by the Air Component, eventually forcing surviving attackers to withdraw from the area.

According to the Army’s preliminary assessment, 14 bodies of the terrorists had been recovered from the battlefield, while further exploitation of the area was still underway. Troops also recovered a cache of arms and ammunition, including six AK-47 rifles.

The Army said the operation was still ongoing as troops worked to recover additional weapons, track fleeing terrorists and prevent them from regrouping.

The military also acknowledged that some soldiers were killed during the encounter, describing their deaths as a sacrifice made in the course of defending the country. The Army expressed condolences to the families of the fallen personnel and commended the troops for their courage and resilience.

The latest clash comes amid continued military operations against terrorist groups in the North-East, where Operation Hadin Kai has maintained pressure on insurgent networks through coordinated ground and air operations. The Army said the successful repulsion of the attack demonstrated the troops’ readiness and the growing effectiveness of joint operations in disrupting terrorist activities.

Military operations are expected to continue in the area as troops conduct further searches and work to prevent the attackers from regrouping.
