Professor Oluwakemi Mary Adekile, a distinguished Professor of Private and Property Law at the University of Lagos, is set to deliver the institution’s 461st inaugural lecture, where she will spotlight the complex and often contentious issues surrounding matrimonial property rights in Nigeria.
The lecture, titled “Unequally Yoked: Matrimonial Property Rights Not a Promise of Law,” is scheduled for Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at the J.F. Ade Ajayi Auditorium, UNILAG.
Professor Adekile, who was elevated to the rank of Professor in September 2021 after serving as an Associate Professor between 2018 and 2021, has built a distinguished academic career marked by extensive research, legal writing and teaching. She previously served as a lecturer at the Nigerian Law School from 1993 to 1998, where she combined teaching with research and administrative responsibilities.
An alumna of the University of Lagos, where she obtained her Ph.D in Law, Adekile also holds a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from Lagos State University. Her academic interests span legal research, educational leadership and grant writing, among others.
The inaugural lecture, which is the 15th in the university’s 2025/2026 academic session, will commence at 4:00 p.m., with guests expected to be seated by 3:45 p.m.
She is expected to interrogate the legal framework governing matrimonial property rights, a subject that continues to generate debate within legal and policy circles, particularly in relation to equity, fairness and spousal protection upon dissolution of marriage.
The Vice Chancellor of UNILAG, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, OON, FAS, has invited members of the academic community, legal practitioners and the general public to attend.
UNILAG’s inaugural lecture series remains a key academic platform for professors to present the outcomes of years of research and contribute to national discourse on pressing legal and societal issues.
