Archbishop Emeritus of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, has urged the Federal Government and relevant institutions to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process, warning that widespread distrust in election outcomes could discourage citizens from participating in future polls.
Speaking during an interview on national television, the respected cleric expressed concern over declining voter participation and the growing perception among some Nigerians that election outcomes are predetermined. He cautioned that such sentiments, if left unaddressed, could further weaken democratic participation and undermine the legitimacy of future elections.
According to Cardinal Onaiyekan, the credibility of any democratic system depends on the electorate’s confidence that their votes will count and that electoral processes remain transparent, free, and fair. He stressed that restoring trust in public institutions is essential to sustaining Nigeria’s democracy ahead of future elections.
The cleric also called on political leaders and electoral stakeholders to demonstrate greater commitment to accountability, fairness, and the rule of law, noting that credible elections remain fundamental to national stability and democratic governance.
His remarks come amid increasing national conversations on electoral reforms and measures aimed at enhancing public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
