A leadership dispute in the Ondo State House of Assembly has intensified, with a majority of lawmakers insisting that plenary will not resume under Speaker Olamide Oladiji.
Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Olatunji Fabiyi, said 21 of the Assembly’s 26 members had supported an impeachment notice and were demanding a change in leadership.
The lawmakers’ complaints concern allegations about the handling of a ₦44 million issue connected with the Ondo State Oil-Producing Areas Development Commission and the reordering of its budget.
Fabiyi alleged that a resolution was prepared in the names of lawmakers without their consideration or approval. He said the dispute was an internal legislative matter and denied suggestions that the executive arm was directing the move against the Speaker.
Another lawmaker, Olawumi Fayemi-Obayelu, alleged that she had faced threats linked to her inquiry into the management of funds intended for oil-producing communities.
Oladiji has denied the allegations, describing them as unfounded. He also disputed the existence of a valid impeachment notice and challenged his accusers to produce evidence supporting the claims against him.
The competing allegations have not been judicially determined. Legislative business remains disrupted while the members seek a resolution of the leadership crisis.
