The Nigerian Bar Association has demanded an urgent and coordinated security response following the reported abduction of Justice Faruku Hassan Bunza of the Kebbi State High Court.
Justice Bunza was reportedly taken from his residence in Bunza Local Government Area by suspected armed criminals. The association described the incident as a serious threat not only to the judicial officer and his family, but also to the independence and effective functioning of the justice system.
NBA President Afam Osigwe, SAN, called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services, the Office of the National Security Adviser and other relevant agencies to deploy the resources required to secure the judge’s safe release.
The association also urged the Kebbi State Government to maintain close cooperation with federal security authorities, while ensuring that those responsible are identified, arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Beyond the immediate rescue effort, the NBA said the incident reinforces the need for stronger, practical protection for judicial officers. Judges, it noted, must be able to perform their constitutional duties without intimidation or fear for their personal safety.
The association expressed solidarity with Justice Bunza’s family, colleagues and the Kebbi State judiciary, and appealed for his prompt and unharmed return.
