Police in Adamawa State have arrested a man identified as Andrawus James for allegedly attempting to sell his 18-year-old niece for ₦7 million after reportedly luring her away from her parents with the promise of employment in Abuja.
James, a resident of Bai village in Yadim District, Fufure Local Government Area, allegedly told his niece, identified simply as Fatima, that he had secured a job for her in the Federal Capital Territory.
According to the police account reported by P.M. News, he allegedly instructed the teenager not to tell her parents about the proposed trip.
The alleged plan came to light after James reportedly approached a man identified as Mohamed Buba in Ganye earlier in August and allegedly disclosed his intention to make money by selling his niece.
The two reportedly discussed the proposed transaction and a price of ₦7 million was allegedly agreed for the teenager. Unknown to James, however, Buba had alerted security personnel about the alleged plan.
Buba subsequently made a formal report at the Ganye Divisional Police Headquarters on August 16.
Security operatives reportedly moved in when James later arrived in Ganye with his niece for the alleged transaction, leading to his arrest. Fatima was not reported to have been sold or harmed before the intervention.
Police have commenced investigation into the matter. The allegations against James remain subject to investigation and any subsequent judicial proceedings.
