Lagos State has emerged as the state with the highest number of registered voters in Nigeria ahead of the 2027 general elections, with more than 7.4 million registered voters.

The latest figures released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) show that Lagos has 7,488,633 registered voters, placing the state ahead of Kano and Kaduna.

According to INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, Nigeria’s voter register has now crossed the 103 million mark following the completion of the three-phase Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise and the commission’s biometric clean-up.

Lagos Leads as Kano and Kaduna Follow

Lagos takes the top position with 7,488,633 registered voters, while Kano State follows with 6,570,276. Kaduna ranks third with 4,662,640 registered voters.

Other states among the top ten are Katsina, Rivers, Oyo, Delta, Benue, Ogun and Bauchi.

The figures highlight Lagos’ significant electoral weight as political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

Over 10 Million New Registrations

INEC disclosed that the three phases of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise produced 10,772,421 new registrations nationwide.

The registrations subsequently went through verification and biometric clean-up to ensure that the final voters’ register reflects eligible voters.

The commission has also announced that newly issued Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) will begin distribution nationwide from October 9, 2026. The exercise will cover newly registered voters, those who transferred their polling locations and voters who requested replacement cards.

What the Numbers Mean for 2027

With Lagos recording the highest number of registered voters, the state is expected to remain an important centre of electoral activity as political parties and candidates prepare for the 2027 elections.

INEC has also announced that the voters’ register will be displayed for public scrutiny from October 9 to 15, 2026, allowing citizens to examine the register and raise claims or objections where necessary.

The development places greater responsibility on registered voters to confirm their details, collect their PVCs where applicable and ensure that their voter information is accurate before election day.

As Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, Lagos’ position at the top of the voter register reinforces the state’s importance in the country’s electoral landscape.
