Legal practitioner Ifeanyi Ejiofor has responded publicly after Nnamdi Kanu ended his services as personal counsel and directed him to stop representing Kanu, members of his family and the Indigenous People of Biafra.
Kanu communicated the termination in a letter dated 22 July 2026 from the Sokoto Correctional Centre. The letter also cautioned against the unauthorised disclosure of confidential or privileged information obtained during the professional relationship.
In a statement shared on Monday, Ejiofor said his earlier silence was a deliberate choice informed by professional ethics, despite what he described as sustained attacks, petitions and allegations against his character and practice.
He maintained that he remained conscious of the duties attached to the lawyer-client relationship and had no intention of disclosing information acquired professionally in breach of applicable ethical rules.
Ejiofor nevertheless questioned the renewed emphasis on confidentiality and suggested that the issue might be connected to information that could arise in separate court proceedings. He did not provide confidential details and said his restraint should not be interpreted as an absence of facts or evidence.
The exchange brings the long professional relationship between Kanu and the lawyer to a public end and raises renewed attention to the continuing duties of confidentiality and legal professional privilege after a retainer has been terminated.
