Govt records 1,437 child abuse cases

Lagos State Government has recorded 1,437 child abuse and welfare cases across the state.

It warned residents against illegal adoption and child trafficking.

Commissioner for Youth and Social Development, Mobolaji Ogunlende, said this during the 2026 Ministerial Press Briefing at Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja.

He said the Child Protection Unit carried out over 5,708 interventions involving child abuse, trafficking, neglect, abandonment, counselling, rescue operations, rehabilitation, legal services and psychosocial support for affected children and families.Related News

He said 520 child protection cases were successfully concluded during the review period.

The commissioner warned that anyone involved in the purchase of children under the guise of adoption would face prosecution.

On health care support, he said the Medical Social Services Unit handled 9,659 welfare-related medical cases involving indigent, abandoned and traumatised patients in government-owned hospitals.

According to him, over N3.99 million was spent on medications, surgeries, dialysis, investigations and medical consumables for vulnerable patients unable to afford treatment.
