FIRS drags Saipem to court over tax evasion

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has filed two separate amended charges against Saipem Contracting Nigeria Limited before a Federal High Court in Lagos, seeking to recover a total of $57,753,337.64 and €14,494,977.68 in unpaid taxes.

The charges, marked FHC/L/907C/24 and FHC/L/908C/24, allege that Saipem Contracting Nigeria Limited failed to pay company income tax and value-added tax (VAT) for the years 2010 to 2014. The company is accused of failing to file accurate and complete tax returns, issuing tax invoices, and registering with the FIRS for tax purposes.

Specific allegations include:

– Failure to pay company income tax totaling $42,068,874.35 for the years 2010 to 2014.
– Failure to issue tax invoices for services rendered, totaling $34,656,833.
– Failure to file accurate and complete tax returns, totaling $15,684,463.29 and €14,494,977.68.
– Failure to appear before the tax office for examination of returns and produce information to FIRS officers.
– Failure to register with FIRS for tax purposes.

The court has fixed October 6, 2025, for the trial to commence.
