Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has filed a fresh ₦10 billion lawsuit against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) over the alleged denial of access to members of his family.
The suit centres on claims that the anti-corruption agency restricted or prevented family members from accessing El-Rufai while he remains in the custody of the commission.
El-Rufai is seeking ₦10 billion in damages, alleging that the restriction amounts to a violation of his fundamental rights and has caused distress to both him and his family.
The latest legal action adds to the former governor’s ongoing legal battles with anti-corruption authorities. It also comes amid investigations involving allegations against his administration during his tenure as Kaduna State governor.
The former governor has consistently denied wrongdoing and challenged aspects of the proceedings against him, maintaining his position that his constitutional and legal rights must be respected.
The fresh suit is expected to put further focus on the conditions under which persons held by anti-corruption agencies may be denied access to relatives and the extent to which such restrictions comply with constitutional protections.
The matter will now be subject to judicial determination, with the court expected to consider the allegations and responses of the parties before making a decision.
