Law, Governance and Politics: The Role of the Legal Profession in Advancing the Rule of Law in Nigeria’s Democracy

I send the Chairman, Isyaku Barau, Esq., the Executive Committee, and the entire members of NBA Minna Branch, a heartfelt congratulations as you mark your 2026 Law Week from 5th to 11th June, 2026.

Your theme cuts straight to the core of our mandate as lawyers. Law, governance, and politics are inseparable threads in our democracy, and when any one frays, the entire fabric is threatened.

In a season where institutions are tested, the legal profession must not retreat to the sidelines. We are called to be the guardians of constitutional order, the voice that demands institutions answer to the law, and the force that keeps politics within the bounds of justice.

Minna Branch has chosen a theme that requires courage and clarity. It is a call for the Bar to lead not just with arguments in court, but with ideas, standards, and accountability in the public square. I commend your leadership for setting a platform for deliberate, solutions-focused engagement at a time when the nation needs it most.

May your week of deliberations rekindle conviction across the Bar. May your resolutions translate into action, and may your contributions strengthen both democracy and public confidence in the rule of law.

Wishing you a Law Week that is intellectually rigorous and impact-driven.
