Audrey Chinelo Ofoegbunam releases Statement on the Abduction of Schoolchildren in Nigeria

The repeated abduction of children from their classrooms is a wound on our conscience as a nation. Schools should be sanctuaries of learning, not scenes of terror. Every child taken from school is a future interrupted, a family shattered, and a society diminished.

We condemn these attacks in the strongest terms. No cause, grievance, or desperation can justify turning education into a battlefield. The abduction of children violates the most basic human rights and undermines the foundation of any nation that hopes to progress.

To the parents and guardians living in fear, to the teachers standing firm in classrooms despite the risk, and to the children who only want to learn: we see you, and your pain is our pain. The trauma of these incidents will linger long after the headlines fade. That is why recovery must go beyond rescue—it must include psychosocial support, safe school infrastructure, and accountability for perpetrators.

We call on government at all levels, security agencies, communities, and civil society to act with urgency and coordination. Protecting schools is not optional. It requires intelligence-led security, community-based early warning systems, and serious investment in making learning environments safe again. Those responsible for these crimes must face the full weight of the law.

Education is a right, not a risk. Until every Nigerian child can sit in class without fear, we have not done enough. I, Audrey Chinelo Ofoegbunam stand with the Bar Association in solidarity with affected families and urges immediate, sustained action to end this scourge.

Our children deserve safety. Our future depends on it.
