The Association of Medical & Health Law Practitioners in Africa (AMHLPA) has announced plans to hold its 2026 Annual International Conference in Lagos, bringing together leading healthcare professionals, legal practitioners, policymakers, researchers, and academics from across Africa and beyond.

The conference, scheduled for July 19 to July 23, 2026, will take place at the Tayo Aderinokun Hall, University of Lagos, under the theme: “Re-imagining Improved Healthcare in Attaining Universal Health Coverage in Africa: Changing the Narrative Towards Global Health Standards.”

According to the organisers, the conference is designed to provide a platform for robust discussions on the future of healthcare delivery, health policy, and legal frameworks required to strengthen healthcare systems across the continent.

The event is expected to address critical issues affecting healthcare in Africa, including human resource development in the health sector, medical aid in conflict zones, pandemic preparedness and emergency response, forensic medicine, primary healthcare revitalisation, ethics in clinical trials, and human rights concerns surrounding the death penalty.

A number of distinguished local and international speakers have been confirmed for the conference.

Among them is Zimbabwe’s Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr. Douglas Mombeshora, who will serve as the keynote speaker. Also expected at the event is former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen, GCON, alongside several renowned academics, healthcare administrators, legislators, and policy experts from various African countries.

Other notable speakers include Prof. Josephine Agbonika, Dean of the Faculty of Law, Veritas University, Abuja; Prof. Foluso Lesi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Development Services), University of Lagos; Senator Amira Saber of Egypt; and several regional representatives of AMHLPA from Southern, Western, and Northern Africa.

Speaking on the significance of the conference, the organisers noted that the gathering would facilitate collaboration between health professionals and legal experts in addressing contemporary healthcare challenges and advancing the pursuit of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) across Africa.

The conference will also feature presentations of research papers and policy discussions aimed at generating innovative solutions for improving healthcare outcomes and strengthening healthcare governance on the continent.

Interested participants have been invited to submit abstracts and full papers for consideration, with selected works to be presented during the conference.

Industry stakeholders believe the conference comes at a crucial time when African nations are seeking sustainable strategies to improve healthcare access, strengthen public health institutions, and align healthcare systems with global best practices.

With delegates expected from several countries, the conference is anticipated to further reinforce the role of health law and policy in driving healthcare reforms and promoting equitable healthcare delivery across Africa.
