Alleged criminal defamation: Court sends Sowore to prison

Sowore 604x340 1

A Federal High Court in Abuja yesterday ordered the presidential candidate of African Action Congress (AAC) and online publisher, Omoyele Sowore, to be remanded in Kuje Prison, Abuja.

In a ruling, Justice Mohammed Umar ordered that Sowore be kept in prison until his motion for a stay of the execution of the order for the  revocation of his bail and bench warrant is determined.

Justice Umar dismissed his other application that the judge be withdrawn from further presiding over his trial on the ground of alleged bias.

The judge adjourned till tomorrow for the hearing of Sowore’s application for stay, which was filed by his new lawyer, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika (SAN).

Before the proceedings started, Sowore had made a loud entry into the court, accompanied by a group of placard-bearing supporters.

The judge had revoked his bail and ordered his arrest on June 16, when he failed to attend court, yet gave no reason for his absence by merely writing a note to the court and seeking an adjournment.

The Department of State Services (DSS) is prosecuting Sowore for allegedly making false claims against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu by referring to him as “a criminal” in a post on his “X” and Facebook accounts.
