A 61-year-old UK-based Nigerian, Anthony Adewale Sobogun, has been sentenced to 28 years in prison for multiple sexual offences against two children spanning 15 years, the London Metropolitan Police announced on Wednesday.
Sobogun, a resident of Thistlewood Crescent, Croydon, was convicted at Inner London Crown Court on 16 counts of sexual abuse, including repeated sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 and child rape, committed during the 1990s and early 2000s. The victims were known to the convict, who subjected them to prolonged abuse.
One victim revealed that Sobogun accompanied her to an abortion clinic after she became pregnant with his child. Officers verified the procedure through medical records and reviewed counseling notes detailing the cycle of abuse.
Sobogun was arrested on 2 July 2025 and charged following a thorough investigation led by the Metropolitan Police, which adopted a victim-led approach to gather evidence and ensure the survivors’ voices were heard in court.
Detective Constable Charlotte Lockyer praised the victims’ courage, stating:
“The bravery of the victims in coming forward is what brought Sobogun to justice. Their courage has stopped him from harming others. Today’s result shows that no matter when the abuse occurred, justice can still be secured.”
The victims, in a joint statement, highlighted that abuse often remains hidden due to fear and stigma. They urged other survivors to speak out, emphasizing:
“If you have experienced abuse, your voice matters, and you deserve to be heard, supported, and protected.”
They also commended the Metropolitan Police, the Crown Prosecution Service, and prosecutor William Goss for their professional handling of the case. The investigation involved video-recorded interviews in specially designed suites to support sensitive evidence gathering, reflecting a victim-centred approach.
The Metropolitan Police reiterated its commitment to improving victim-survivor experiences and ensuring strong evidence is gathered in abuse cases.
