African Democratic Congress vice-presidential candidate Rotimi Amaechi has said he would withdraw from Atiku Abubakar’s presidential ticket and campaign for President Bola Tinubu if the price of petrol falls to ₦600 per litre.
Amaechi, a former Rivers State governor and former Minister of Transportation, made the statement during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, while questioning the Tinubu administration’s claims that its economic reforms were beginning to improve the lives of Nigerians.
Reacting to President Tinubu’s Independence Day declaration that Nigeria had entered an “age of prosperity,” Amaechi questioned whether Nigerians were already experiencing reductions in the cost of transportation and other essential goods and services.
He said he was prepared to personally visit a filling station to verify the current pump price of petrol.
“If fuel has come down to 600, I will campaign for President Tinubu,” Amaechi said.
He went further, saying anyone who doubted him could accompany him with a camera to a filling station, adding that if petrol was indeed selling at ₦600 per litre, he would withdraw as Atiku’s vice-presidential candidate and campaign for Tinubu.
Amaechi’s comments were made in the context of his criticism of the economic situation in the country and the impact of petrol prices on transportation and household expenses.
Petrol prices have remained a significant economic and political issue since the removal of the fuel subsidy in 2023. The Tinubu administration has defended the policy as necessary to reduce the financial burden of subsidy payments and free government resources for other areas of the economy.
Amaechi is currently Atiku’s running mate on the ADC ticket for the 2027 presidential election, while Tinubu is seeking another term on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.
