PRESS RELEASE

WE ISSUE 14 DAYS ‘ ULTIMATUM AS WE MARK ALL-NIGERIA MASS ACTION AGAINST WAR, ECONOMIC ATTACKS, EDUCATION UNDERFUNDING, ENVIRONMENTAL DEGRADATION AND REPRESSION
(ANSWER )TODAY

We of the Save Climate and Democracy Naija Coalition hereby issues fresh 14 days’ ultimatum to the Major General Muhammadu Buhari-led regime and Colonel- Governors to immediately withdraw all trumped-up charges against Omoyele Sowore , Agba Jalingo and Joseph Odok amidst other prisoners of Conscience languishing in detention cells of the Department of State Services and other security agencies failing which as from 9th February, 2020, we shall begin mass mobilisation for a Day of Action Against Repression (DARE) on 11th February, 2020 , the return date of the matter of Omoyele Sowore.

Today, we are joining the Global Day of Action called by the Act Now To Stop War and End Racism(ANSWER) in Nigeria, which we have christened as the All-Nigerian Mass Action Against War, Economic Attacks, Education Underfunding , Environmental Degradation and Repression (ANSWER) in the Nigerian fashion.

We are glad to state that one of our major centres for action is the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) , Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, where the National Association of Nigerian Students(NANS) Zone D and the Alliance of Nigerian Students Against Neo-liberal Attacks (ANSA) Southwest will be holding a Joint Press Conference to kickstart the mobilisation of students’ in the Southwestern Nigeria against war, economic Attacks, Education Underfunding and Repression of activists including Omoyele Sowore, Agba Jalingo, Joseph Odok and Abbey TROTSKY.

We view this as historic as a return of NANS Zone D to the campuses and we believe it should be the commencement of the restoration of the Zone to its heydey of the most vibrant and democratically run Zone will NANS, before it collapse into wings of the different political parties of the ruling class in the region.

We are of the view that more strategic actions by Students’ Unions in University of Ibadan, Tai Solarin University of Education, Olabisi Onabanjo University and Lagos State University to build a wall of solidarity to push for restoration of Students’ Unions in University of Lagos and in particular, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, where an anti-students’ accommodation policy is about to be implemented.

While the Trade Union Congress equally passed a resolution to be part of the Global Day of Action, little or no efforts were made to mobilise towards it. This is at the face of the 21 days’ ultimatum issued by the Congress that would expire by 28th January, 2020.

We are of the firm view that without proper mass mobilisation by NLC, TUC and ULC , the implementation of the 30,000 naira minimum wage will be a mirage. It is in this wise that we call for a Joint NEC of the three labour centres at the expiration of the 21 days’ ultimatum to push for minimum wage implementation.

The Joint NEC with invitation extended to sister pro-working people’s mass organizations should also be utilised to discuss the rebuilding of the Labour Party or the building of a new mass working people’s political alternative to begin the political struggle by the labour movement for power . We are of the view that without a comprehensive working people’s political strategy to take power from the hands of the wings of thieving elite and begin the reordering of society along the lines of meeting the essential needs of all, nothing fundamentally would change.
