The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the safe release of the Chairman of Jezco Group, Joseph Ezeokafor, and a reverend sister who were abducted by armed men in the Ifite-Awka area of the state.
The two victims regained their freedom on Saturday, August 15, 2026, ten days after they were reportedly abducted. They were subsequently picked up by a family member at a location close to the Anambra-Enugu boundary and have since returned safely.
Ezeokafor, a prominent businessman and Managing Director of JEZCO Oil, was reportedly kidnapped while praying at a church in Ifite-Awka.
His abduction had generated widespread concern among his family, business associates and residents of the state. Reports subsequently emerged that the abductors initially demanded a ransom of ₦700 million before allegedly increasing their demand to ₦1.5 billion.
The circumstances surrounding the victims’ release remain unclear, including whether any ransom was paid.
Confirming their release, the Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga, said the command had received confirmation that Ezeokafor and the reverend sister had been freed and had safely returned.
The police said efforts were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding their release and obtain information that could assist investigators in identifying and apprehending those responsible for the abduction.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Nnanna Ama, has consequently directed intensified intelligence-led operations and a manhunt for the suspected kidnappers.
According to the police, the operation involves personnel from the Nigeria Police, Department of State Services, military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Agunechemba security operatives and other relevant agencies.
The command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and provide credible information that could assist security agencies in tracking down the perpetrators.
The release brings an end to a ten-day ordeal for the victims, while security agencies continue efforts to unravel the circumstances of the abduction and bring those responsible to justice.
