The Plateau State Police Command has arrested three persons in connection with the death of a 25-year-old man following an alleged act of mob justice in Jos.
The incident reportedly followed an accusation concerning a missing mobile phone. Police said the matter was brought to the attention of the Lamingo Division after the victim had been taken to Jos University Teaching Hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
Command spokesperson Alfred Alabo said an investigation was opened immediately and three suspects were subsequently taken into custody. Investigators are also working to identify and locate other persons believed to have been involved.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Jos for further investigation. The command said those against whom sufficient evidence is established will be charged before a competent court.
Police authorities condemned the resort to mob action, stressing that an allegation of theft does not authorise private citizens to punish a suspect. Every accused person remains entitled to due process, while suspected offences should be reported to lawful security agencies.
The command urged residents to cooperate with investigators and warned that participation in vigilante violence may itself attract criminal liability.
