A new telecommunications company, Swift Telephone Network Limited (STN), is set to enter Nigeria’s telecom market after securing a Unified Access Service Licence from the Nigerian Communications Commission.
The licence, which took effect on October 1, 2026, authorises the Nigerian-owned company to provide a range of telecommunications services, including mobile, fixed, voice and data services across the country.
The approval marks STN’s transition from its beginnings as a telephone call service provider into an independent full-service telecommunications operator. The company will now operate in a market currently dominated by established players including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Globacom and T2.
STN’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Oluwole Adetuyi, described the licence as a significant milestone in the company’s development, saying it represented a new chapter in its growth and commitment to building telecommunications infrastructure in Nigeria.
The company said it plans to invest in infrastructure, expand connectivity and contribute towards bridging Nigeria’s digital divide. It is also expected to create employment opportunities through engineering, technical, distribution and retail operations as its network expands.
STN is expected to announce details of its infrastructure rollout, strategic partnerships and investor engagements as preparations for commercial operations progress.
The new entrant will face significant competition in the Nigerian telecom market. Industry figures for July 2026 showed that MTN and Airtel together accounted for about 86 per cent of active mobile subscriptions, highlighting the scale of the challenge confronting new operators seeking to establish a substantial market presence.
