TRIBUTE TO DR. MUIZ ADEYEMI BANIRE, OON, SAN, (LIFE BENCHER) ON HIS 60TH BIRTHDAY
Celebrating a Life of Service, Scholarship, Advocacy and Leadership
Sixty years is no ordinary milestone. It is a significant moment in the journey of a man whose life has been marked by remarkable accomplishments, intellectual distinction, service to humanity and an unwavering commitment to the advancement of the legal profession and society. On the occasion of his 60th birthday, I celebrate Dr. Muiz Adeyemi Banire, OON, SAN, Life Bencher, a distinguished legal practitioner, scholar, administrator, public intellectual and a man of uncommon courage and conviction.
Dr. Banire’s journey is one that speaks eloquently of the rewards of discipline, diligence and purposeful living. From his formative years to his emergence as one of the notable voices in Nigeria’s legal profession, he has consistently demonstrated an exceptional capacity to combine intellectual depth with practical engagement and public service.
As a legal practitioner and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Banire has distinguished himself through his formidable advocacy, deep knowledge of the law and passionate commitment to justice. His contributions to the development of Nigerian jurisprudence and the legal profession have earned him considerable respect among his colleagues and admirers. He belongs to that rare class of lawyers for whom the law is not merely a profession but an instrument for the promotion of justice, accountability and good governance.
His intellectual accomplishments are equally remarkable. As a scholar, teacher and author, Dr. Banire has contributed substantially to legal education and discourse. His writings and interventions have enriched conversations on important questions of law, governance and public administration. He has demonstrated, time and again, that the true measure of scholarship lies not merely in the accumulation of knowledge but in the ability to deploy knowledge in the service of society.
Beyond the courtroom and the lecture room, Dr. Banire has also made significant contributions to public service and professional leadership. His years of service have reflected a strong sense of responsibility and a willingness to engage difficult questions where others might prefer silence. He has never been afraid to express his convictions, particularly where he believes that the principles of justice, fairness and institutional integrity are at stake.
One of the most striking attributes of Dr. Banire is his intellectual courage. He is a man who speaks his mind, asks difficult questions and challenges established positions when conscience and principle demand it. In an age when conformity is sometimes mistaken for wisdom, his willingness to stand by his convictions remains an admirable quality.
His career also demonstrates that excellence is not achieved by talent alone. It requires perseverance, sacrifice, continuous learning and an enduring commitment to one’s ideals. Dr. Banire has exemplified these virtues in a career spanning several decades, and his accomplishments at 60 are a testament to the value of purposeful engagement with life. Without attempting to pen his profile, Dr. Banire’s foray into the political side of public service began in 1999 when he was dragged out of the classroom and appointed a Special Adviser on Political and Legislative Matters, and subsequently Commissioner in Lagos State by the then Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu (now President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR). He served for three terms as a Commissioner manning three different ministries, namely, Special Duties, Transport, and the Environment. His last term as Commissioner was under Gov. Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN. He later became the National Legal Adviser of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2014, and was later appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari as the Chairman of Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) in 2018. Dr. Banire is currently the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the University of Uyo, having been appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2025. Dr. Banire was conferred with the national honour of Officer of the Order of Niger (OON) in October, 2022, and he is a Life Bencher.
Those who have encountered Dr. Banire closely will readily attest to his generosity, accessibility and willingness to contribute to the growth of others. His influence is therefore measured not only by the positions he has occupied or the honours he has received, but also by the lives he has touched and the minds he has helped to shape. While I have been a beneficiary of Dr. Banire’s generosity at different times, a particular instance will remain very green in my memory. Sometime in 2016, while I was contesting for the position of NBA Welfare Secretary, Dr. Banire accosted me after a monthly General Meeting of the NBA Ikeja Branch, of which we are both members, and characteristically said to me, “you this man, it’s like you don’t need money o, I asked you to come all this while and you refused to show up”. What is more interesting was that he had prior to that time supported my campaign for which I was grateful and contended, even though I was actually in dire need of additional campaign funds, but I didn’t go back to him despite telling me to come back later for further support. My reason for not going was simple, what he gave me as the first instalment as he called it was more than what any other person had given to support the campaign, I therefore found it inappropriate to go back to him for further support. That is the nature of Dr. Banire. He can be effortlessly and spontaneously philanthropic when he believes in a course.
At 60, Dr. Banire has every reason to look back with gratitude and satisfaction. But knowing his temperament and passion for service, this milestone is better regarded not as a moment to consider slowing down, but as another chapter in a continuing journey. There remain many more contributions to make, many more younger minds to inspire, many more battles for good governance and justice to fight and many more ideas to bring to the national discourse.
On this auspicious occasion, I salute a respected advocate, accomplished scholar, courageous public intellectual and distinguished member of the legal profession. I celebrate not merely the attainment of six decades, but the substance with which those decades have been filled.
May the years ahead bring you greater fulfilment, renewed strength, sound health and enduring opportunities to continue your service to the profession, the nation and humanity.
Happy 60th Birthday, Dr. Muiz Adeyemi Banire, OON, SAN.
