The Lagos State Judiciary, in partnership with the Law Hub Development and Advocacy Centre (Law Hub), will on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, launch the Lagos State Judiciary Non-Custodial Sentencing Practice Direction 2025.
The launch, scheduled for Providence Hotel, GRA, Ikeja, at 2:00 p.m., is part of the MacArthur Foundation’s On Nigeria Project aimed at strengthening justice sector reforms.
Director of Law Hub, Osita Okoro, Esq., said the new Practice Direction was developed to bridge critical gaps in the implementation of non-custodial sentencing under the Administration of Criminal Justice Law (ACJL) of Lagos State. He explained that while non-custodial sentencing is recognized by law, practical enforcement has remained weak, necessitating a comprehensive framework to guide its application.
The Honourable Chief Judge of Lagos State has formally approved and signed the Practice Direction, setting the stage for its adoption by the courts.
Okoro described the development as “a milestone that will help decongest correctional centres, entrench restorative justice, and strengthen public confidence in justice delivery in Lagos State.”
