Gunmen have killed an expatriate and two security operatives at a road construction site in Kebbi State, while a former youth leader was killed in a separate attack in Plateau State. The incidents have raised fresh concerns about the safety of residents, workers and travellers in the affected communities.
In Kebbi State, the attack occurred at a construction site for the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway in Gubba Village, Maiyama Local Government Area. Two civilians were also reportedly injured during the incident.
The Kebbi State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, identified the attackers as suspected members of the Lakurawa terrorist group, who allegedly approached the site from the Kebbe axis of neighbouring Sokoto State. The injured civilians were evacuated for medical treatment as security personnel responded to the situation.
Security operations were also reported along the Birnin Malam axis following another attack by suspected terrorists. According to the police account, military personnel neutralised several attackers and recovered motorcycles. Security agencies subsequently increased their presence and surveillance in the affected areas.
Construction activities at the superhighway site were suspended following the incident, highlighting the potential impact of insecurity on major infrastructure projects and the workers responsible for delivering them.
In a separate incident in Plateau State, gunmen killed Rwas Danladi, a former chairman of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) in Gashish District.
Danladi was reportedly attacked at about 6 p.m. on Wednesday while riding his motorcycle along the Rantis Village section of the Gashish-Barkin Ladi Road on his way back to Barkin Ladi.
His death was confirmed by the association’s National Publicity Secretary, Rwang Tengwong, who condemned the killing and expressed condolences to Danladi’s family, friends and the wider community.
The association also reported two other attacks in parts of the Berom communities on Wednesday, leaving two people injured. One of the victims, Mafeng Samuel Lamba, was reportedly attacked around Gwom-Ajang in Foron and taken to the Jos University Teaching Hospital for treatment. Another victim, Bitrus Pam Dadon, was attacked along Sho Road, where his motorcycle was reportedly stolen.
In response to the incidents, the Berom Youth Moulders-Association called on the Plateau State Government and relevant security agencies to investigate the killing, apprehend those responsible and strengthen security in vulnerable communities. It also emphasised the need for improved surveillance along roads and in affected areas, including parts of Barkin Ladi, Jos South and Riyom.
The incidents in Kebbi and Plateau highlight the continuing security challenges facing communities across parts of the country. Beyond the loss of lives and injuries, attacks on construction sites and public roads raise concerns about the safety of workers, the movement of residents and the continuity of essential economic activities.
As security agencies respond to the incidents, investigations and sustained efforts to protect vulnerable communities will be crucial to addressing the threats and restoring public confidence in the affected areas.
