The Egbe Amofin O’odua has called for the immediate dissolution of the current Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), citing concerns over its legitimacy, composition and perceived neutrality.

The call formed part of resolutions reached at the end of the association’s 2026 National Conference held at the Ojaja Resort, Ile-Ife, Osun State, The conference attracted over 700 lawyers, judicial officers, academics, public office holders and other stakeholders from across the country.

In a communiqué issued at the end of the conference, themed “Advancing Constitutional Democracy, Accountability and Responsible Governance: The Role of Law,” delegates expressed reservations about the process leading to the constitution of the present ECNBA and recommended its dissolution in order to preserve confidence in the forthcoming NBA elections.

The conference further recommended the constitution of a new electoral committee through a transparent, inclusive and impartial process capable of inspiring confidence among members of the Bar. It suggested that such a committee could emerge through the General Council of the Bar, the Body of Past Presidents of the NBA, or broad stakeholder consultations involving candidates and interest groups.

On national security, the forum renewed its advocacy for the establishment of State Police, noting that prevailing security challenges have exposed the limitations of the current centralised policing structure. Delegates commended the House of Representatives for passing the Constitution Alteration Bill on State Police and urged the Senate to expedite action on the proposal.

The conference also expressed grave concern over the continued abduction of teachers and pupils in Oyo State since May 15, 2026, and called on both the Federal and Oyo State Governments to intensify efforts towards securing their immediate and unconditional release.

In the area of NBA politics, the conference reaffirmed the adoption of Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN, as the sole presidential candidate of Egbe Amofin O’odua for the 2026 NBA national elections. It also endorsed other candidates of Yoruba extraction for various national offices.

Delegates further recommended reforms to the NBA electronic voting process, including stronger voter authentication mechanisms, transmission of voting credentials to registered telephone numbers and integration of National Identification Number (NIN) verification systems to enhance transparency and credibility.

The conference reaffirmed the importance of compliance with court orders and respect for the rule of law, stressing that obedience to lawful judicial decisions remains fundamental to constitutional democracy. Participants equally called for deliberate measures aimed at strengthening public confidence in the judiciary through improved integrity, professionalism and institutional accountability.

The forum also underscored the need for stronger regional collaboration among South-West states in infrastructure development, security, transportation and economic planning, while emphasising mentorship and leadership development for young lawyers.
