Court Stops NUJ From Proceeding With October 3-5 National Delegate Conference

A Federal High Court in Ibadan, presided by Justice Opeloye Ogunbowale has issued an order restraining the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), its President, Chris Isiguzo and Secretary, Mr Shuiabu Usman Liman from proceeding with events of the Union’s national delegate conference fixed for October 3-5 in Umuahia, Abia State.

Also barred from conducting the scheduled election of the union on that date were the entire members of the Credentials Committee led by Garba Mohammed.

The 2021 delegate conference had been mired in controversy and polarised the NUJ along disparate lines.

Ruling on a motion exparte dated 21/9/2021 and filed by Mr Soji Amosu and Ayokunle Ewuoso Chairman and Secretary respectively, of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun State Council, Justice Ogunbowale said he was disposed to issuing the order after reading the affidavit and supporting exhibits attached to the motion after listening to their Counsel, Deji Enisenyin Esq.

He therefore barred the respondents, their agents or privies from proceeding with the election as it would injure the subject matter in the suit.

The case has been adjourned till 26 October for hearing on the motion on notice.
