A Sokoto State High Court has sentenced three men, including a Nigerien, to death by hanging after finding them guilty of terrorism and arms proliferation.

The convicts are Yusuf Muhammad, also known as Sallau, a Nigerien; Jabbi Alhaji Yalle; and Kabiru Muhammad.

They were arrested on June 13, 2025, by operatives of the Department of State Services Counter-Terrorism Unit over alleged involvement in cross-border crimes, arms trafficking and terrorism.

Delivering judgment, Justice Bello convicted the three defendants on the charges brought against them and sentenced them to death by hanging.

The court also ordered that all monetary exhibits recovered from the convicts be forfeited to the Federal Government.

The Sokoto judgment comes amid a string of recent terrorism and violent crime convictions linked to DSS operations across the country.

Barely a week earlier, a Federal High Court in Katsina sentenced a female arms courier, Hauwa’u Mukhtar, to death after she was arrested by the DSS while allegedly transporting 438 rounds of ammunition to a bandit kingpin.

In another case, a Federal High Court in Abuja sentenced Idris Abdulmalik Omeiza, Al Qasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik and Abdulhaleem Idris to death over their involvement in the deadly attack on worshippers at St Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State.

The attack left more than 40 worshippers dead.

Last week, a Kogi State High Court sitting in Lokoja also sentenced Jibrin Halilu to death by hanging after he was convicted of conspiracy, kidnapping and murder of a hotelier in Obajana, Kogi State.

Halilu was also arrested by the DSS before being charged to court.
