The Anambra State Police Command has obtained a court order remanding a couple accused of abusing a 10-year-old boy, while also opening a separate investigation into an alleged child trafficking incident involving a woman arrested at a hospital.

Police spokesperson,  Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed on Thursday that Mr Chukwudi Chukwuyere, 40, and his wife, Mrs Chisom Chukwuyere, 30, were remanded in a correctional centre after being arraigned in connection with the alleged abuse of a child in Isiowulu.

According to the police, the court action followed the completion of preliminary investigations into the case, which drew widespread public attention after footage of the victim circulated on social media.

The statement said: “The suspects were arraigned in court following the conclusion of preliminary investigations into the case, which attracted public concern after reports and video footage of the victim surfaced on social media.”

The command also praised members of the public whose prompt action and useful information led to the child’s rescue. Police said the victim was taken for medical treatment, while the suspects were arrested for investigation.

In a separate development, detectives have begun investigating an alleged child trafficking operation after officers attached to the Awada Divisional Headquarters rescued a 37-year-old woman from an angry crowd at Divine Mercy Hospital on Eze Iweka Road in Awada, Obosi.

The suspect, identified as Anurika, allegedly entered the hospital on 23 June 2026 wearing clothing similar to that of a nurse and was reportedly seen secretly recording newborn babies in the maternity ward.

The police statement said: “An eyewitness said the suspect, in the afternoon of 23rd June 2026 allegedly gained access to the hospital premises disguised in attire resembling that of a nurse, and was observed making secret video recording of the newborn babies in the maternity ward.

“When questioned by the hospital staff and other persons present, she reportedly claimed to be an employee of the hospital.

“However, upon verification, the management of the hospital confirmed that she was not a member of its staff.”

Police said the woman is being held in protective custody and is assisting investigators as they work to identify other individuals who may be linked to the alleged trafficking network.

The command assured the public that further updates would be provided as investigations progress.
