DOING THINGS DIFFERENTLY: WELFARE THAT WORKS FOR EVERY LAWYER

Happy Weekend, Distinguished Colleagues of the Inner and Utter Bar.

My name is Audrey Chinelo Ofoegbunam, and welfare is my forte.

Audrey means Noble Strength.
Chinelo means God’s Thoughts.
Ofoegbunam means My staff of office will not kill me, nor will my kindness to others kill me.

My names are my mantle.
Noble Strength because welfare needs a fighter, not a figurehead. Someone who will stand up for the new wig with no brief, someone who will be invited to the table where decisions are made and can speak up for, the colleague battling health costs, security brutalities, the senior who served and feels forgotten, and the list goes on and on…

God’s Thoughts because we cannot keep recycling “usual” ideas and expect different results. We need wisdom, planning, and systems that work. That’s why I’m pushing the NBA Connect App so welfare is a click away, not a chase.

A Staff of Office that Protects because the office I seek should shield you, not burden you. Kindness in service, not kindness that empties you. From the day you’re called to Bar, through active practice, into retirement, and even in death… the Bar must be your cover.

We must do things differently. And we must do different things.
No more silence when lawyers suffer. No more bureaucracy when help is urgent. No more shallow thoughts of financial security. No more redundancy in our thought process. No more forgetting our seniors, our persons with disabilities, our retirees.

As your National Welfare Secretary, some of my plans are to fight for:
Seamless NHIS or HMO structures, and Emergency Funds that actually reach you. Dignity at Every Stage of your career.
Financial Empowerment Schemes through National and International partnerships.
Accountability First because your welfare is my priority.

Indeed! Every Lawyer matters.
