The Lagos State  Government has threatened legal action against an X user accused of falsely presenting a flood video from Bangladesh as an incident in Lagos.

Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources Tokunbo Wahab said deleting the video after it was debunked would not protect the user from possible legal consequences.

The user, popularly known as Enugu Loudspeaker and identified on X as #Jamessucre2, had shared the footage as evidence of flooding in Lagos.

Wahab, however, said checks showed that the video originated from Bangladesh.

“The flood video you shared and attributed to Lagos State is actually from Bangladesh,” the commissioner wrote.

He urged social media users to verify the authenticity and origin of materials before sharing them publicly.

According to him, circulating inaccurate information could mislead the public and undermine genuine discussions about issues affecting Lagos residents.

Wahab said the state government respected freedom of expression but maintained that the right must be exercised responsibly and within legal limits.

He argued that deliberately spreading false information could damage the credibility of legitimate complaints raised by residents.

The X user later acknowledged that the video was recorded outside Nigeria and deleted the post.

“It’s been confirmed to have happened outside the country. The post has been taken down,” the user wrote.

Despite the retraction, Wahab said the state government would still pursue legal action.

“Taking down the post after misleading the public does not absolve you of the responsibility,” he said.

“Appropriate legal action will still be pursued, and this matter will be taken to its logical conclusion in accordance with the law.”
