Free, Fair and Credible NBA Elections: Why the Adoption of NIN and a Brief Postponement Are Imperative

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has long stood as a symbol of the rule of law, constitutionalism, transparency and democratic values. As the foremost professional body of lawyers in Nigeria, it bears a solemn responsibility to ensure that its internal electoral processes reflect the very principles it advocates for in the nation’s democratic journey.

The credibility of any election depends not merely on the declaration of results, but on the confidence of participants in the integrity of the process. It is therefore imperative that every reasonable step be taken to guarantee that the forthcoming NBA elections are free, fair, transparent and credible.

One of the most effective measures towards achieving this objective is the adoption of the National Identification Number (NIN) as the primary means of voter authentication. Unlike email verification, which is susceptible to multiple challenges including identity manipulation and unauthorized access, the NIN provides a more secure, unique and verifiable means of confirming the identity of every eligible voter. Its adoption will significantly strengthen the integrity of the electoral process and enhance confidence in the outcome.

However, introducing a new authentication process without adequately educating voters would be counterproductive. Thousands of members may be unfamiliar with the practical steps involved in using their NIN to vote electronically. Without proper sensitization, genuine voters could experience avoidable difficulties on election day, leading to frustration, disenfranchisement and unnecessary disputes.
It is for this reason that the call for a short postponement of the election should not be viewed as an attempt to delay the democratic process. Rather, it should be seen as a responsible and pragmatic step aimed at ensuring that every eligible member is sufficiently informed and prepared to participate effectively in the election.
A brief postponement will provide the NBA with the opportunity to embark on extensive voter education through webinars, demonstration videos, frequently asked questions, mock voting exercises and other awareness initiatives. Such efforts will enable members to understand the voting process, verify their credentials and resolve any technical issues well before election day.

The NBA must remember that expediency should never take precedence over credibility. An election conducted hurriedly, without adequate preparation and voter enlightenment, risks undermining public confidence and diminishing the legitimacy of those elected. Conversely, an election conducted after proper sensitization and with a secure voter authentication system will strengthen the Association’s democratic credentials and preserve its institutional integrity.

The legal profession expects no less. Lawyers across Nigeria deserve an electoral process that is transparent, inclusive and beyond reproach. The leadership of the NBA should therefore seize this opportunity to reinforce confidence in its electoral system by embracing the use of the NIN and allowing sufficient time for comprehensive voter sensitization.

Ultimately, history will not judge the NBA by how quickly it conducted its election, but by how fairly, transparently and credibly it did so. A short postponement in the interest of justice, transparency and member participation is not a setback, it is an investment in the legitimacy of the Association’s democratic process.

It is for the foregoing reasons that I appeal to the leadership of our great Association, especially the President, the ECNBA and NEC to allow reason to prevail by exercising the most needed restraint at this crucial period.
