Abuja, Nigeria — February 14, 2026
Nigeria’s House of Representatives has announced that it will reconvene on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, for an emergency sitting to deliberate on issues stemming from the recently released timetable for the 2027 general elections.
The decision to call the special session follows the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) publication of key dates for next year’s polls, which include February 20, 2027 for the presidential and National Assembly elections and March 6, 2027 for governorship and state assembly contests.
In a statement signed by the House spokesperson, Hon. Akin Rotimi, lawmakers were informed of the emergency sitting through an internal memo issued by the Office of the Speaker late on Friday. The notice emphasised the constitutional and national significance of the electoral timetable and the need for prompt legislative attention.
The primary focus of the emergency session will be to consider legislative matters tied to the INEC timetable and its implications for Nigeria’s democratic process, in line with the National Assembly’s constitutional duties. Members have been urged to prioritise attendance, reflecting how seriously the legislature views the unfolding developments.
Concerns have also been raised by segments of the public, particularly among Muslim communities, over the timetable’s overlap with the Ramadan fasting period, prompting calls for discussions and possible consultations between INEC and lawmakers.
The emergency sitting underscores the legislature’s intent to move swiftly on electoral issues with far-reaching consequences for the country’s electoral calendar and the conduct of future polls.
